Day 1, October 13
The Extraordinary 58: Paving the Way for Economic Mobility & Successful Futures
- Dr. Jeff Cox, President of the NC Community College System, will challenge attendees to embark on a new era of transformative change. Guided by our vision to be the national standard in workforce development and higher education, this session will explore how the Propel NC business model will drive economic mobility and foster generational transformation across North Carolina. Discover how our innovative business model will propel our colleges to lead the nation in providing accessible, high-quality education to prepare our students for a rapidly changing labor market. This is more than a moment—it’s a movement toward a brighter future for all North Carolinians.
Day 2, October 14
The Future of Artificial Intelligence and Its Implications for Education
- Dr. Bill Daggett, a national leader in education and founder of the Successful Practices Network and the International Center for Leadership in Education, offer strategies that will allow attendees to employ AI as their co-pilot and free them from time-consuming tasks. Daggett will also describe how AI will increasingly impact the workplace, home, and society, which will cause a major shift in the skills, knowledge, and attributes students will need to be successful beyond school.
Day 3, October 15
Building Lifelong Learning Pathways and Regional Workforce Ecosystems
This panel discussion will showcase how to build strong partnerships between colleges, employers, and communities, empowering learners and driving economic growth. Panelists include:
- Dr. Kassandra McGhee, Director, Jobs for the Future
- Dr. David Shockley, President, Surry Community College
- Dr. Travis L. Reeves, Surry County Schools Superintendent

Panelists in the third session represent both national and state level perspectives and will paint a clear picture of how colleges can create thriving workforce ecosystems by aligning education with industry needs. Surry-Yadkin Works will serve as an example of a work-based learning program that joined forces with Surry Community College to connect workplaces to the classroom, so students are prepared for careers in the real world.
A director from Jobs for the Future, Dr. Kassandra McGhee, will also be on the panel to talk about how their organization works with partners to design solutions, scale best practices, influence policy and action, and invest in innovations. McGhee leads a diverse portfolio of projects dedicated to fostering equitable economic advancement for all, focusing on cultivating college and career pathways, employer and stakeholder engagement strategies, enhancing stakeholder capacity, scaling apprenticeship and work-based learning, and improving systems alignment to close equity gaps within our education and workforce ecosystems.
“Our new vision drives us to find ways to better support economic mobility and create transformational generational statewide.” said Dr. Brian S. Merritt, Senior VP & Chief Academic Officer at the System. “Our biennial conference is a time for us to come together as a System, to learn from each other, and to discover ways we can collectively continue to set the national standard for innovation in higher education and workforce development.”
